PAST EVENTS
May 2020:
The Hanna Roundhouse Society is currently working on the Fire Safety work to meet the requirements provided to us summer 2019! Thank you to Prairie Crocus Foundation (part of Community Foundations for SE Alberta) & 100+Women Who Care Hanna, and funds we have from some previous fundraising projects & donations, we can start installing 3 of 5 fire rated doors.
Anchor Glass, Hanna will start installing new metal doors mid-June 2020 so funds will be reinjected back into our community. The remaining doors will be installed when construction of the fire-rated wall inserts into the existing Fire Wall & exit hallway, are completed. One grant award announcement date is June 1 & the other is July 15, 2020. So, we are anxiously awaiting these dates to move to completing the Fire Safety work.
Once the Fire Safety work is completed, the Great Hall (locomotive service bays 1-5, approx. 9,500 ft2) will be available for rent for weddings, receptions, group gatherings, music events, community church services, photo shoots, etc. The entire building is over 20,000 ft2 & access to more areas will be opened as restoration work is completed.
The rustic facility will operate on temporary services until permanent services can be installed. Until then, the HRS can continue to use temporary services like generators for power & temporary washroom facilities.
We will announce when we are able to open & continue to share the Hanna Roundhouse Society's Provincial Historic Resource with the public again!

Locomotive Doors on East Side of Roundhouse
1913 Canadian Northern Railroad locomotive doors where the steam locomotives would pass through into the roundhouse for repairs &/or servicing. At the beginning, there were pits where workers could work under the locomotive.
In 1961, diesel locomotives had replaced steam locomotives & roundhouses became obsolete. CN laid off their workers & closed the doors. The rail yard was still used until about 2010 when the last engine through Hanna was driven by engineer, Gerald (Brass) Campion.

Hanna Turntable facing East towards CN Dam
The 86'6" Turntable east of the 1913 Canadian Northern Railroad Roundhouse. The 1920 CN turntable is enclosed in a circle of concrete & runs on a partial circular track. This would have been driven originally with some steam from a steam locomotive attached to the turntable The water body in the distance is the CN Dam which was used to provide water for the locomotives. |
