ABOUT the Hanna Roundhouse Society

Picture
his is a photo of the Hanna Roundhouse prior to the vandalism of the 1919 section sometime around 2010.  A previous owner had equipment in the 1919 section, the beautiful brick portion to the left in this photo.  Someone broke in, hot-wired the equipment & drove through the locomotive doors, compromising the roof & brick walls. (Verbal communication from Fortinski to Beaudoin)
An engineer who was contracted to provide a structural engineer report prior to purchasing the property & prior to demolition of the 1919 section in 2012, indicated the weight of the 1919 roof was distributed over the brick walls, then the timber roof supports.
The original 1913 section roof weight was distributed over the timber roof supports, then the concrete walls. (ref. Beaudoin 2013).

The Hanna Roundhouse Society is a group of volunteers who are passionate about this historic building which has so much to offer our community.  We want to bring it "back to life", save the history & share it with others.

The Hanna Roundhouse Society (HRS) was created in January 2010 to save the 1913 Canadian Northern Railway Roundhouse in Hanna, Alberta & the history associated with it.  A structural engineer report in 2013 confirmed the original 19,000 ft2 1913 roundhouse with 10 locomotive bays & attached 3,700 ft2 Boiler Room/Machine Shop was restorable. With the purchase finalized in September 2013, restoration officially began.

The unique 1913 roundhouse is reportedly one of the last original roundhouses with an operational turntable, in Western Canada.  The HRS is non-profit society of volunteers who have been working to restore this piece of local railway history, collect history of those
who worked in the Hanna Roundhouse & provide a unique venue to support our
rural community.
